Walmart Pulls Guns, Ammo Displays From US Stores … Then Changes Its Mind

Update

3:26 p.m. ET — 10/30 — A day after saying it removed ammunition and firearms from U.S. store displays, Walmart announced it has begun returning the items to stores’ shelves.

Walmart is temporarily removing guns and ammo from all U.S. sales floors amid rising tensions across the country.

The move comes both as a precautionary measure ahead of the election, and in response to another law enforcement involved shooting.

Following Monday’s fatal police shooting of Walter Wallace Jr., a Black man, in Philadelphia, peaceful protests became heated. Police tweeted Tuesday that “a large crowd of [approximately] 1000 is looting businesses” in the Port Richmond area of the city.

“We have seen some isolated civil unrest and as we have done on several occasions over the last few years, we have moved our firearms and ammunition off the sales floor as a precaution for the safety of our associates and customers,” Walmart spokesman Kory Lundberg told NBC News in an emailed statement.

Walmart plans to continue the sale of these items to customers who request them — they will just no longer be on full display in their stores.

The retailer did not say when it plans to place these particular items back on store shelves.

Walmart sells firearms in 4,700 stores nationwide.
